Today in Georgia, TB specialists, including international experts and representatives of communities affected by TB, will choose two-three priority groups, which are facing barriers in diagnosing and treatment of the disease. Further, a qualitative study will be analyse the barriers related to gender, stigma, and human rights these groups face during TB care pathway. The study findings and experts’ recommendations, should determine the relevant authorities in TB control to make changes in the healthcare system, strengthen TB strategies and focus on the patient, as well as contribute to the application of necessary measures in reducing stigma against people with TB in Georgia.

The multi-stakeholders meeting will be held today, October 24th, in Tbilisi and takes place within the framework of TB-REP 2.0 project. A similar assessment of TB vulnerable groups TB took place at the beginning of this month in Kazakhstan.

The event taking place in the capital of Georgia will last for one day and will be attended by the representatives of the governmental and non-governmental organizations wotking in this domain, representatives of health care structures and medical services providers, representatives of communities of people affected by TB, and other relevant stakeholders. Among the non-governmental organizations and state institutions participating in this meeting are the Centre for Health Policies and Studies (PAS Centre) from the Republic of Moldova, the  National Center of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (NCTLD) of Georgia, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia and the NGO „New Vector“.

The meeting is organized by the NGO „New Vector“ from Tbilisi, one of the organisations implementing small grants within the framework of the regional project „Advancing People-Centered Quality TB Care - From the New Model of Care Towards Improving DR-TB Early Detection and Treatment Outcomes (TB-REP 2.0)“, funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

We remind that, „TB-REP 2.0“ project is implemented by the PAS Centre during 2019-2021 in 11 partner countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. These states of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia were selected taking into account the increased incidence of the disease.

The overall goal of „TB-REP 2.0“ is to foster timely TB case detection and improved treatment outcomes in patients with special emphasis on drug-resistant TB. The project incorporates the full spectrum of DR-TB prevention and care issues, targeting both health and sustainable community systems for improved quality and strengthened people-centered approaches in TB care delivery, able to address the needs of key and vulnerable populations.

Note: ‘’New Vector’’ is a community-based organization for drug users established in 2006 in Georgia aiming at improving access to programs on tuberculosis and Hepatitis B and C prevention and treatment. The organization is one of the main provider of harm reduction, medical and social programs, while also playing an important role in the development of drug policy and health policy in the country through the development of activist resource and community mobilization.
